Abstract: The aims of this present work is to analyze the symbolic and the imaginary within the works A bolsa amarela and Ana Z., aonde vai você,verifying how children's literature can contribute to the process of training the reader. It was investigated that the symbolic images, allegories and metaphors in Lygia Bojunga's A bolsa amarela and Ana Z, aonde vai você?, by Marina Colasanti, put in perspective not only the protagonists' maturing process - Raquel and Ana , respectively, but also allow different interpretations for their readers. Although the two works narrate completely different stories, both manifest, in the course of events, the affirmation of the characters and the use of symbolic images that give a metaphorical character to the narratives. From the understanding that Raquel and Ana try to overcome their fears and become safe and responsible adults that is important processes for young readers, it is possible to observe that the young reader can identify with situations lived by the characters and therefore develop their autonomy, in addition, to overcoming conflicts. Thus, the procedure adopted for the construction of this study is a bibliographic review distributed in three chapters. The first is divided into three topics, addresses the training of the reader, and how this training process presents in its complexity the educational function of literature as a challenge inside and outside the classroom. In this way, the reader formation process and the functions of literature within this context are analyzed first, followed by the Reception Aesthetics or Theory of Reception proposed by Wolfgang Iser, Hans Robert Jauss, and their contributions to understand the complex interaction workreader, and, finally, it analyzes how children's literature contributes to the formation of the reader. In the second chapter, in addition to the presentation of fundamental concepts about the imaginary and the symbolic, based mainly on the theories proposed by Gilbert Durand, Gaston Bachelard, Jacques Le Goff and Mircea Eliade, the discussion on the imaginary and the symbolic begins in both works in study. Both narratives are organized in reading plans between the literal and the interpretive, in which one level can be perceived on the surface of the text, and the other seeks images to reveal other meanings. In the third chapter, the works are analyzed individually, in order to identify and translate images and symbols used by the authors. In this chapter we used authors such as Chevalier and Gheerbrant, Umberto Eco, Vera Maria Tietzmann Silva, among others. In this analysis, it appears that the works selected for this study, can contribute to the reader's autonomy, and at the same time discuss the role of literature in the process of formation of that one. As a result, each investigated narrative presents initiation interpretation learnings equally necessary for self-knowledge, which can help the maturation and the formation of the reader
